CHAPTER 7

Immediately, I wanted to know where everyone was. Thankfully, I didn’t have to go searching because the commotion drew all the guests into the foyer where each stood gawking at the spectacle outside — except for two

“Where are Fallon and Edna?” I asked the group and watched as their heads swiveled in unison to look at each other to confirm that neither were there.

“The last I saw Fallon, he was heading for the door to the hallway after I finished my speech,” Thorn said.

“Yeah, he said he needed to use the restroom,” Miranda added, so I dashed back down the hall to pound on the men’s room door.

“Fallon? Are you in there?” I called, not wanting to charge inside in case he wasn’t decent, but I got no answer after several moments of waiting, so I beat on the door again, harder this time. “Fallon? It’s an emergency, so if you’re in there, please come out!”

“Selena!” Jadis called, and I glanced down the hallway to find her standing with Fallon by her side. “He’s here!”

I rejoined everyone else in the foyer, confused. How could Fallon have gotten from the bathroom to the foyer with no one else noticing where he’d gone? And had he been outside when the fire started? With the snow coming down the way it was, I couldn’t imagine why anyone would want to set foot outdoors, but maybe he just wanted a breath of fresh air? And where had Edna disappeared to?

Fallon ran a hand through his hair, his face ashen as the distant flames from the shed swirled in the reflection of his eyes.

“Are you okay?” I asked.

“I-I’m fine, I… Just don’t understand what happened.”

“Where were you?”

“I went for a little air after Thorn finished his speech. I was catching up on the notifications I’d missed on my phone, and the next thing I know, something out there ignites. I didn’t know what to do, so I shouted for help, and Blair and Kiki came running.”

His story seemed more than a little suspicious, especially given he was the only one outside when the fire started, but I couldn’t outright accuse him. “Did you see anyone or anything suspicious out there before the fire ignited?”

Fallon shot me a critical look. “Maybe, but in this snow?” he asked, gesturing out at the swirling snow. “How can I be sure it wasn’t just something I imagined?”

He had a point. If it weren’t for the bright flames casting long, eerie shadows across the grounds, I wouldn’t have been able to see anything out there either. Though I had half a mind to charge out into the snow after Blair and Kiki to check on Declan, I thought better of it right away. As far as I knew, no one besides Miranda had any idea why someone might’ve wanted to set the shed on fire, and I saw in the guests’ confused looks that I needed to stay put and keep them calm — and find Edna.

“What could’ve started the fire?” Miranda asked.
